A Tradition of Excellence: A World Class Future

Queen's University is unique. Few other universities across the world combine international recognition for research and national recognition for innovation in the curriculum with the student-centred ethos and leadership role in the community which are the hallmarks of Queen’s.

Founded in 1845 as Queen's College, one of three established in Ireland by Queen Victoria (the others being at Cork and Galway), it became a University in its own right in 1908.

A broadly-based, research-driven university with a dynamic world-class research and education portfolio and strong international connections, Queen’s is currently implementing an ambitious Vision for the Future.

Queen's University Belfast's aim is to promote a spirit of creativity and innovation and nurture a dynamic community of world-class academics and students with the ability and imagination to make a positive contribution to society.

Queen's has a vibrant academic environment which supports world-class innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration between research and education. Underpinning this are 20 Schools, which are the University's primary management units and provide the best framework for the development of the University's world-class research and education portfolio.

More than 25,231 postgraduate and undergraduate students, both full-time and part-time, make Queen’s one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom.

Queen's University is located in Belfast, the main city in Northern Ireland, with a population of 500,000. A compact city of wonderful Victorian and Edwardian architecture, Belfast is the commercial and cultural capital of the province, housing a number of museums, galleries and theatres (including its own Grand Opera House) and surrounded by unspoilt countryside. The "University Quarter" is situated on the south side of the city in which most cultural and social amenities are located and where most students live. As a result the University and its environs provide a focus around which a lively academic and social life can be enjoyed.
