Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery

Institution Attended: University of Limerick

Hi there, my name is Eric Landymore and I have just completed the first of the four year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme at the University of Limerick.  My hometown is Vancouver Canada, where I received my B.Sc. in cell biology and genetics at the University of British Colombia and where I worked full time as a Respiratory Therapist and part-time paramedic. In January 2007 I moved to London England to be with my then fiancé, now wife, while she finished her residency in General Practice medicine.

It has been a great privilege for me to be part of the very first medical school class at UL.  We have been instructed by experts in their fields and the faculty has taken a personal interest in each one of us and have gone out of their way to see all their students succeed and excel.  Our class has become a tight knit community and we have forged friendships which will only grow and develop over the coming years.

There have been many opportunities to become involved with campus life, including a co-ed tag rugby league, a newly instituted medical society, and countless social events.  Among the year's highlights was the society's sold out first annual black tie ball, which was attended by students, staff, and consultants and a weekend junket to Berlin to visit the pathology museum and absorb some local culture.

For me, living on campus was a great decision. Not only were there cows outside my residence window (quite a novelty for a city boy) but there was the convenience of quick and easy access to class, the athletic centre and pool, and athletic fields as well as cafes and pubs.. If you want a change of scenery, the shops, clubs and restaurants of Limerick are only a short bus ride away.

This first year at UL has gone by faster than I could have ever imagined and I have learned a great deal through opportunity and experience but above all I have learned the warmth, hospitality, and graciousness of the Irish people is second to none.

My hobbies now are reading historical books and racing cars.
